Uniformly exponentially or polynomially stable approximations for second order evolution equations and some applications

چکیده
In this paper, we consider the approximation of second order evolution equations. It is well known that the approximated system by finite element or finite difference is not uniformly exponentially or polynomially stable with respect to the discretization parameter, even if the continuous system has this property. Our goal is to damp the spurious high frequency modes by introducing numerical viscosity terms in the approximation scheme. With these viscosity terms, we show the exponential or polynomial decay of the discrete scheme when the continuous problem has such a decay and when the spectrum of the spatial operator associated with the undamped problem satisfies the generalized gap condition. By using the Trotter-Kato Theorem, we further show the convergence of the discrete solution to the continuous one. Some illustrative examples are also presented.

Uniformly exponentially stable approximations for a class of second order evolution equations Application to LQR optimization problems
We consider the approximation of a class of exponentially stable infinite dimensional linear systems modelling the damped vibrations of one dimensional vibrating systems. It is by now well known that the approximating systems obtained by usual finite element or finite difference are not uniformly stable with respect to the discretization parameter. Our main result shows that, by adding a suitab...
متن کاملDecay rates for solutions of a system of wave equations with memory ∗ Mauro
The purpose of this article is to study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions to a coupled system of wave equations having integral convolutions as memory terms. We prove that when the kernels of the convolutions decay exponentially, the first and second order energy of the solutions decay exponentially. Also we show that when the kernels decay polynomially, these energies decay polynomially.
متن کاملOn second derivative 3-stage Hermite--Birkhoff--Obrechkoff methods for stiff ODEs: A-stable up to order 10 with variable stepsize
Variable-step (VS) second derivative $k$-step $3$-stage Hermite--Birkhoff--Obrechkoff (HBO) methods of order $p=(k+3)$, denoted by HBO$(p)$ are constructed as a combination of linear $k$-step methods of order $(p-2)$ and a second derivative two-step diagonally implicit $3$-stage Hermite--Birkhoff method of order 5 (DIHB5) for solving stiff ordinary differential equations. The main reason for co...
متن کاملUniformly-stable Finite Element Methods for Darcy-stokes-brinkman Models
In this paper, we consider 2D and 3D Darcy-Stokes interface problems. These equations are related to Brinkman model that treats both Darcy’s law and Stokes equations in a single form of PDE but with strongly discontinuous viscosity coefficient and zerothorder term coefficient. We present three different methods to construct uniformly stable finite element approximations. The first two methods a...
متن کاملAnalytic Solution for Hypersonic Flow Past a Slender Elliptic Cone Using Second-Order Perturbation Approximations
An approximate analytical solution is obtained for hypersonic flow past a slender elliptic cone using second-order perturbation techniques in spherical coordinate systems. The analysis is based on perturbations of hypersonic flow past a circular cone aligned with the free stream, the perturbations stemming from the small cross-section eccentricity. By means of hypersonic approximations for the ...
